Josh Mulcoy
RP: I remember watching you in Peter Trow’s movie – Strung Out – it was one of the first times I had seen anyone kiting in the waves where they were actually slowing everything down and trying to ride the wave – rather than looking like they water skiing. Since then – how have you seen the sport progress – in regards to riding waves with kite and board?
JM: Back then I was on a twin tip. It blows my mind to think of riding waves on something like that. Surfboards work so well. It only makes sense we want to ride waves why wouldn’t we ride a surfboard. If you look at some of the guys they are no doubt just surfing but have a kite bar in their hands now.
RP: In regards to boards what are you using these days?
JM: I am using the 5’11 Liquid Force Skate. I recently signed with Liquid and am so lucky that I get to use Pat Rawson he is one of the best surfboard shapers in the world. Many kiteboarders have no idea how stoked they should be that someone like Pat is making boards for are sport.
RP: Did you think that kiting with a surfboard in the waves would be more popular than it is now?
JM: No not to surprised I think it is the evolution of the sport and people are figuring it out slowly. I think surfboards are no doubt the best board for kiting in the surf, but it also is about having fun so whatever people are happy with.
RP: In your opinion how has waveriding improved in kiteboarding over the last few years?
JM: Yes people are changing to surfboards, which looks way better in the surf and works better. People are slowing down and not just getting dragged around by the kite. The new kite designs have helped a lot.
RP: Do you see a future for the sport in the waves?
JM: Yes without a doubt people like Ben making movies that are straight surf is one of the best things anyone can do for the future of wave riding. It is opening people eyes to the sport that never want to go sit in the wind and watch. Surfers hate wind so the last thing they want to do is go watch kiting. With the videos they can sit in their house and be blown away by what is going on.
RP: You travel a fair bit chasing waves – do you always pack a kite and harness?
JM: Yes without a doubt. There are so many surf trips where the wind comes up and my friends just sit around and I get to go Kite.
Check this clip out of Mr Mulcoy surfing and kiting – nice stuff!

PKRA annouces event in OZ.
PKRA announces an event in OZ for later this year Check out the full press release here
www.prokitetour.com/news.php?id=25
It is a great idea and about time that our local talent got to show the world the level of our skills here in OZ. I will try and catch up with the guys from Minotaur Sports Management and get the lowdown on what they have planned for the event in the next few weeks.
Update on the PKRA contest can be found below
We are delighted to announce that the Gold Coast will be hosting the PKRA (Professional Kiteriders Association) World Tour in Australia in 2010. As you will be aware Australia has never before hosted a World Kitesurfing Tour event.
In 2010, Australia will not only host the PKRA Kitesurfing World Tour but also be the last event on the PKRA World Tour Calendar. Thus Australia will host the crowning ceremony for the World Champion Male and Female Kitesurfers for 2010.
The 2010 Tour has already been tipped to be the best ever Tour year. Riders, Organisers and Crew are all eagerly anticipating what is in store.
Anton Richardson (CEO)
“We are already extremely confident that we will have at least 8 of the top 12 PKRA World Tour seeded riders competing for the Australian Title.”
“We are determined that the Australian Event will be regarded as the premier event on the Tour, with a major pro rider presence. We are confident that the Australian kiteboarding community will support the event and travel to the Gold Coast to welcome the Tour and to celebrate the end of Tour with the newly crowned World Champions. The Gold Coast is famous for its parties and the PKRA World Tour Award Ceremony will definitely not disappoint.”
“Competition is set to be fierce to be the first to win the Australian title. We hope that the Wild Card entries will give the pro riders a real run for their money. Australian riders such as Keahi De Aboitz will surely battle to win a PKRA title.”
Sebastien Talem (Major Sports Event Manager)
“The Event will be run in December 2010. The exact dates are yet to be confirmed as is the location. We will certainly keep KBM and its readers well informed.”
“We are in discussion with several interested partners with a view to collaborating to ensure that the Event is spectacular.”
“We are committed to the motto: Save the best for last.”
“We are very grateful to the Gold Coast City Council for their support and assistance.”
The PKRA World Tour
The PKRA World Tour is an ISAF (International Sailing Federation) and IKA (International Kiteboarding Association) approved World Professional Kiteboarding Tour. The Tour has estimated 250 participants from over 30 different nationalities. A maximum of 10 events with two discards will determine the PKRA World Champion in 2010.
A PKRA World Tour event can consist of a number of different disciplines, namely: Freestyle, Wave, Race and Speed. The main Tour discipline is Freestyle.
The Australian Event proposes to hold a multi discipline event to include Freestyle, Wave and Race. The multi discipline event decreases the likelihood that weather will affect the event. A Race discipline can be held in light wind. A Freestyle discipline can be held in most conditions. A Wave discipline can be held if the waves are here. Other display competitions will be held depending on weather, such as “big air”, most visually impressive trick, hang time, speed, “kite loop” etc.
Kite Clinic
There will be a kite clinic running throughout the duration of the event. Professional Kiteboarders will be available to give instruction to beginners, intermediate and advanced riders.
Pro Clinic
We will provide a pro-school where the pro riders will meet with upcoming sports stars to offer some words of wisdom about being professional in sport. Some of the leading Sporting Managers and Sports Lawyers have confirmed that they will also be there to provide free advice on how to properly go about the transition to being a full time professional.
Wild Cards
We will have a number of Wild Card entries available for male and female riders. We anticipate that there will be a nation wide search for those riders that will compete to a standard and commitment befitting of Australian sporting tradition. Watch this space for how to win your Wild Card.
Accommodation & Travel
We have had several enquiries as to whether there will be an event package deal organised for those planning on travelling to the Gold Coast for the event. We are currently in discussions with our travel and accommodation partners and will announce discount packages once the details have been confirmed.
Minotaur Sports Management
Minotaur Sports Management Pty Ltd is a company set up to specialise in Extreme Sports Event Management. The company is committed to bringing Extreme Sporting Events to Australia, in particular Queensland and the Gold Coast. Anton A Richardson and Sebastien Talem would love to hear from you if you have any suggestions as to how to make this event the best event on the PKRA World Tour Calendar.
For further information on the event or sponsorship enquiries please contact us on minotaursport@gmail.com
Aaron Hadlow enters the Matrix

This has been kicking around for awhile now and most of you have probably checked it out. If you haven’t it is worth watching and has some pretty cool angles and effects. Not too sure about the story line and the smoking bartender almost reminds me of a character out of a David Lynch film. Andy Gordon and Aaron have put together several short flicks that are on the net. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyAiY6mMGaE
